Malawi mahogany, white and yellow ochre, gold leaf, albatross feathers

Stands 1.1m, Galangarri has used a mahogany chair from Malawi (circ 1996)as the medium. The Gumatj mother hides her children in the dilly bag(Bathi). The mother has wings as protector. The rose gold leaf horizon is Galangarri, which means last light where the earth meets the spirit sky at the end of every day.

The ochre was collected by Galangarri when she was led to a particular part of Queensland and told to dig under a tree. The cache of sacred white ochre(gapan) symbolises spirit and ash. Yellow symbolises fire. The Gumatj are fire people. The ochre is gritty to show the grit and resilience of the ancestors of the stolen generations.

The dilly bag has carved holes which show where children fell through and were taken from their mothers, this Gumatj mother is happy she has her children but sad for the taken. Diamond shapes are Wirrili which is protection and the finder of yellow ochre. There is more in this story by Galangarri, just ask her.
The utmost of care is taken upon packaging your art to safely get to you no matter where on our planet.
